How to Turn a GPT Image 2 Storyboard Into a Finished Video

Describe a multi-shot video in a single prompt and you're asking the model to decide framing, composition, transitions, and consistency all at once, in one pass, with no chance to course-correct mid-scene. Sometimes it guesses right. Often it doesn't guess the way you had it in your head. Storyboarding first inverts that: you make the visual decisions frame by frame in GPT Image 2, then hand a video model something precise to animate instead of something to interpret.
Why this actually works
A storyboard panel is a much stronger instruction than a paragraph of description. It locks framing, character position, lighting, and mood before any motion gets generated, so the video model's job shrinks to what it's actually good at: timing, camera movement, and transitions, rather than inventing the whole scene from scratch. For commercial work especially, product ads, brand campaigns, anything with a client who has an opinion, that difference is the gap between a clip you publish and one you regenerate five times and still don't love.
How to decide what storyboard you're building
Not every storyboard needs the same treatment. What it's for changes the framing, the style, and the prompts that actually work.
Cinematic storyboard
Built for a director and DP, planning camera coverage before anyone rolls. One panel communicates one shot, and the camera can do anything, a crane move, a whip pan, whatever the story needs, because a real or virtual camera will be positioned to match whatever's drawn.

Game storyboard
This is a genuinely different discipline, not the same thing with a different skin. A cinematic board plans a shot for the camera crew. A game storyboard plans a moment for the player, what they see, what they do, and how the world responds, and it has to respect the actual camera system the game runs on. A dramatic crane shot that looks great on paper is worthless if the game's engine only supports a fixed over-the-shoulder rig.

One exception worth knowing: if you're storyboarding a cutscene rather than active gameplay, that's closer to cinematic storyboarding than the example above, since a cutscene isn't interactive and the camera is free to move however the moment needs.
Marketing or product storyboard
Usually built around one hero action beat, a chase, a reveal, a transformation, compressed into far fewer shots than a narrative piece. The product needs to read clearly even mid-motion.

POV or documentary style
The opposite instinct from the other two above: less directed, more captured. Composition should read slightly imperfect on purpose.

Cartoon or animated storyboard
The art style has to lock from panel one. Drift is far more visible here than in a photorealistic piece, the eye catches a stylistic inconsistency faster than a realistic one.

Why every example above is written as 16:9, and yours might not be
Match your storyboard's aspect ratio to where the finished video will actually live, not to convention. 16:9 is the right call for anything landing on YouTube, a website player, or a pitch deck. If you're building for TikTok, Reels, or Shorts, storyboard in 9:16 from the first panel. A square 1:1 or portrait 4:5 makes sense for an in-feed post.
This matters more here than it does in traditional storyboarding. A hand-drawn board is a planning sketch, a person interprets it and reframes for the camera, so its own aspect ratio barely matters. An AI-generated storyboard panel is usually the literal reference image fed straight into the video model. Build it at 16:9 and then need 9:16 for the final platform, and you're cropping away roughly two-thirds of the horizontal frame, which is exactly where fine detail, expression, and the small things that make AI output convincing tend to live.
Decide the final platform before writing a single panel prompt. If one project genuinely needs to land in more than one shape, generate two separate sets of panels rather than cropping one down after the fact.
Before you write a single panel prompt
If a character recurs across more than one panel, in any of the five types above, build a character reference sheet first. Save it, then reference that sheet plus a short identity string in every panel prompt that follows. Our character sheet guide covers building that reference properly, and skipping this step is the single most common reason a storyboard starts drifting by panel six or seven.
How many shots do you actually need
There's no fixed number, but there is a real range depending on what you're building, and "it depends" isn't useful when you're staring at a blank page.
For a short clip under 15 seconds, skip the formal board entirely. One line per shot, covering subject, action, camera intent, and mood, is usually enough to generate from directly.
For a single-location piece with one or two characters, work from a shot list rather than full panels. Lock the character reference first, then note each shot in one line. Only build an actual panel when a shot genuinely needs visual explanation, a complex composition, an effect, a hero moment, something words alone won't communicate clearly enough to generate correctly.
For anything longer or multi-scene, board only the key beats: the opening shot, the emotional pivot, and how the scene closes. Let generation fill the coverage in between rather than storyboarding every single shot in a sequence.
For client or agency work, board it fully regardless of length. External approvals still expect a complete, shot-by-shot storyboard, that hasn't changed just because generation replaced drawing.
If you want traditional production numbers as a sanity check, they hold up well: a standard dialogue scene typically runs 8 to 15 panels, an action sequence runs 20 to 40, a 30-second commercial lands around 10 to 15, and a 60-second one around 20 to 30. A full short film usually totals somewhere between 30 and 80 panels across its most demanding scenes, not a panel for every shot in the whole piece. The rule underneath every one of these numbers is the same: one panel per distinct visual change, not one panel per second of screen time.
The build process, step by step
Decide the type and purpose first. Game cinematic, product ad, documentary-style, cartoon, whatever it is, that decision shapes everything that follows.
Build a character sheet if anyone recurs. Before the storyboard, not partway through it.
Write the shot list old-school. Shot number, location, action, camera angle, one line each, before opening GPT Image 2. Let the model execute the plan, don't ask it to invent one. A vague prompt like "make me a storyboard for a coffee commercial" reliably produces generic frames that don't connect to each other, because there's no plan underneath it.
Lock a style-anchor phrase and repeat it identically across every panel, matching whichever type you're building, the full style line from the cartoon example above, for instance. That one repeated phrase does more for continuity than almost anything else in the prompt.
Generate one panel at a time, checked before moving to the next. Expect some drift over a long board regardless, softening by panel 18 or so is normal and rarely something a viewer catches. Catching it early is cheaper than catching it at panel 20.
Picking a model to animate it
The three options handle this job differently, and picking the wrong one for the job costs you more regeneration than the storyboarding saved.
Seedance 2.5 or 2.0 is the pick when you want one continuous take built from your storyboard's strongest frames, with the deepest reference control of the three. Seedance 2.5 specifically takes up to 50 tagged references in a single generation, useful if several panels need to inform one continuous shot.
Kling 3.0 is the pick for multi-shot sequences where camera language matters, dolly moves, whip-pans, tracking shots, plus native dialogue if characters need to actually talk. Feed it one storyboard panel per shot rather than trying to compress the whole sequence into one generation.
Gemini Omni Flash is a different tool, not a smaller version of the other two. It takes a storyboard panel as a reference image and generates from it conversationally, "make the lighting warmer," "extend the pan," refining through follow-up instructions rather than rewriting the whole prompt. It's capped at 10 seconds and 720p in preview, no 1080p yet, so it's the right choice for fast iteration and revision, not for a long hero shot.
What this doesn't fix
Character consistency is meaningfully better with a storyboard-first workflow, but there's no single method that solves it completely, every approach, turnaround sheets included, has its own failure points, and it's worth testing on your specific character before committing a full production to it.
Worth being honest about the actual comparison, too: this doesn't replace a storyboard artist for film or serious commercial production. A 24-frame board from a freelancer runs $240 to $600 at the low end. What this replaces is not having a storyboard at all because that cost never penciled out for a short-form piece. Different job, different value.
Four storyboard-to-video pairings
Each pairing is a storyboard panel prompt followed by the animation prompt that turns it into motion, matched to whichever of the three models fits the shot.
Fashion and lifestyle

Common questions
Does the type of storyboard actually change how I should prompt it?
Yes, and game and cinematic are genuinely different disciplines, not the same approach with a different look. A cinematic board plans a shot for the camera, a game board plans a moment for the player and has to respect the actual in-game camera system. Product work compresses everything into one hero beat, POV work should look intentionally less polished, and cartoon work needs the art style locked from panel one.
Should my storyboard always be 16:9?
